Katie Murphy, aged 33, was being driven to hospital by her partner Stephen Kirby, aged 32, when she suddenly felt the urge to push.
The couple pulled into the car park at KFC off the A38 in Bromsgrove while Stephen called an ambulance.

On August 29, 2026, Katie Murphy and her partner Stephen Kirby were driving to the hospital in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England, when they realized the baby was not going to wait. They had been sent home earlier that day after being told it was not time yet. By 9 p.m., the contractions had intensified. They got in the car for the thirty-minute drive. About halfway there, Katie felt the baby crowning. There was nowhere to pull over on the A38. Then Stephen saw the KFC they frequented, and he pulled into the parking lot.
He called emergency services while running around to the passenger side. As he opened the door, he caught his son just as he was born at 9:35 p.m. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces, and was healthy. The ambulance arrived about five minutes later and took the family to the hospital.
They named him Cody. Family and friends quickly gave him a nickname that will likely follow him for life: Colonel Cody, a nod to KFC founder Colonel Harland Sanders.
Katie said the midwifery staff found the story so funny that they ordered KFC for dinner. The couple has already decided they will take Cody back to that same KFC for his first birthday, and they joke that he might get his first weekend job there when he is old enough.
KFC responded with a statement, saying they were honored to have been the place of Cody’s birth and sending the family merchandise and vouchers to celebrate.
Katie put it simply. It was not the birth she expected, but it was worth every bit of pain. And now Cody has a very weird story to tell his school friends when he grows up.
