Judi Dench has openly shared how severe age-related macular degeneration has changed her everyday life.
During an ITV News interview with her longtime friend, Sir Ian McKellen, the Oscar-winning actress explained that she can no longer recognize people’s faces, watch television, or read properly. She also said she may fall unless she holds onto someone for support.
When McKellen asked what she does when she cannot recognize someone, Dench gave a simple answer: she tells them honestly that she cannot see and asks them to introduce themselves.
Diagnosed with AMD in 2012, Dench eventually found reading scripts too difficult. However, she discovered another way to memorize her lines. Friends repeatedly read her dialogue aloud, allowing her to learn through listening.
Despite the challenges, Dench continues to approach life with honesty, humor, and determination. Her story shows how people can adapt to major changes without giving up on what they love.
