- Audrey Hepburn was comfortable in her own skin, staying away plastic surgery.
- The Breakfast at Tiffany‘s star once declared that she “earned every single” wrinkle.
Audrey Hepburn wasn’t afraid of aging gracefully.
The Breakfast at Tiffany‘s star’s thoughts on plastic surgery were shared in the new book, Intimate Audrey: An Authorized Biography, written by her son Sean Hepburn Ferrer and co-author Wendy Holden.
“Any suggestion of plastic surgery was anathema to her, as she honored the history of every line on her face,” the co-authors write, noting that she would do a monthly detox over the course of a couple of days, and “eschewed all thoughts of fad diets.”

Hepburn’s granddaughter and Sean’s daughter, Emma Ferrer, previously told PEOPLE in 2017 about her legendary grandmother. “I wish I had met her because every person that met her says she was even lovelier and more radiant than she was in the movies,” she said.
Emma also mentioned a favorite story about Hepburn, which “truly embodies her concept of beauty,” which Sean is also fond of. Before her death, she was asked to select a photo for an American Photo magazine issue featuring celebrities and their favorite photos. She picked a photo of her with a child on one of her UNICEF missions.
The photographer John Isaac asked the Roman Holiday star if she wanted to have any wrinkles removed in the image for publication. Hepburn replied, “Don’t you dare touch any one of those wrinkles; I earned every single one of them.”
“She never once thought of getting plastic surgery,” she added. “For her, wrinkles were symbols of age, experience and wisdom.”
Intimate Audrey: An Authorized Biography also put to rest any rumors that the petite actress struggled with an eating disorder.
“Despite decades of gossip that she had an eating disorder because she was so slim, she cooked and baked and ate what she liked but was careful with portions,” the book notes, detailing her daily food and beverage regimen and what she would do between meals.
After breakfast, for example, Hepburn would go for a walk “at a punishing pace for those of us trailing behind.” She also wasn’t afraid to indulge with a drink or sweet treat.
“She drank the occasional cold beer, and after her daily nap, she’d have a square of dark chocolate — her ‘cure for the blues,’ followed by a ‘finger’ of whisky when the sun set,” the biography adds.
