In May 2022, Gareth Weeks, a 37-year-old father from Dunfermline, Scotland, was desperately waiting for a liver transplant. He had been living with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition that damages the bile ducts and can eventually cause serious liver problems.
After seven months on the transplant waiting list, Gareth’s health had deteriorated significantly. Just five days before receiving his transplant, he took a photo with his six-year-old daughter, Zara, sitting on his shoulders. His yellow skin and eyes reflected the severe jaundice caused by his failing liver.
Then, on May 16, 2022, Gareth received the life-changing call he had been waiting for. A suitable donor had been found, and he underwent a liver transplant in Edinburgh.
The operation gave Gareth a second chance and allowed his liver function to improve.
Six weeks later, Gareth returned to the same location with Zara and recreated their earlier photograph. The difference was remarkable. The yellowing that had been visible in the first picture was gone, showing how dramatically his health had improved.
Gareth shared the two photographs to highlight the incredible impact of organ donation. His story serves as a powerful reminder that one person’s decision to become an organ donor can give another person more time with the people they love.
For Gareth and Zara, that gift meant another chance to make memories together.
