A sudden flash flood tore through northern Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors, killing at least 95 people and leaving nearly 400 missing — more than 290 of them foreign nationals. The disaster hit the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Chitwan districts with almost no warning, wiping out entire villages, 19 bridges, roughly 40 km of highway, and 13 major hydropower facilities. Rescue teams are still working the narrow mountain terrain, and the downstream threat has already triggered flood alerts as far away as India.

What Caused a Flood This Sudden and This Violent

This wasn’t the slow-building inundation that defines a typical monsoon season. The water arrived fast — a wall of force that gave communities along the Lhende, Bhote Koshi, and Trishuli rivers almost no time to respond. Climate scientists and disaster management authorities are now working backward through three overlapping scenarios to figure out why.

The leading hypothesis involves a massive ice avalanche that collapsed into the Lhende River and temporarily dammed it. When that natural dam gave way, the stored water released downstream in a single violent surge. Investigators are also examining whether a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) — the sudden collapse of a high-altitude lake swollen by rising temperatures and heavy rainfall — played a role, either independently or as part of the same chain reaction. And the timing of a magnitude 4.4 earthquake recorded in nearby Tibetan territory shortly before the flood adds another variable: seismic activity that may have destabilized slopes or triggered the initial avalanche. What’s clear, even before any final cause is confirmed, is that the Himalayas are carrying more risk with every degree the planet warms — and that risk is no longer abstract. It just destroyed dozens of bridges and 13 hydropower plants in one afternoon, much like what glacial acceleration is doing to Andean water sources in other parts of the world.

As of now, no single cause has been officially confirmed. The investigation is ongoing.

Who Is Missing and How Rescue Operations Are Unfolding

The human cost is still being counted. Of the nearly 400 people missing, more than 290 are foreign nationals — travelers from India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Australia, including pilgrims on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, trekkers, and tourists caught in remote valleys like Syabrubesi and Timure. Local residents across four districts account for the rest.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah confirmed that over 250 people have been rescued via military helicopters, but the operation is far from over. Poor weather and the sheer inaccessibility of mountain terrain are limiting how many flights can get in per day. Ground teams face roads that simply no longer exist — 40 kilometers of highway erased.

Downstream, the crisis is spreading across a border. Because the Trishuli River feeds into the Gandak River entering India, authorities in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have issued high alerts for a potential 3-meter rise in water levels. A local catastrophe that began near the Tibet border is now a regional emergency.
