The pandemic began in early 2020 and reshaped daily life almost overnight. Streets emptied. Schools closed. Offices shut down. People learned to shop for groceries with masks on, to stand six feet apart in lines, to wave at friends through windows.
Zoom became a place for work meetings, family dinners, and funerals. Weddings were postponed. Funerals were limited to ten people. Hugs were replaced with elbow bumps and air kisses. The phrase “you’re on mute” became part of the language.
The pandemic also created small moments of unexpected beauty. People in lockdown in India saw the Himalayas for the first time in decades, because the air pollution had cleared. In Venice, the canals ran clear. Animals wandered into empty city streets. Neighbors who had lived beside each other for years finally learned each other’s names. Balconies in Italy and Spain filled with music and applause for healthcare workers every evening at the same time.
Now, looking back, those photographs feel like artifacts from a world that was paused and then restarted. We adapted faster than anyone could have predicted.
We learned new ways of working, gathering, grieving, and celebrating. And then, slowly, most of us returned to something that looked like before, even if we were not exactly the same people.
The pandemic is no longer a daily reality for most of the world. But the images remain. Empty streets. Masked faces. Circles on the grass. They remind us of a time when normal disappeared and we made something else instead.
