Right after the…

I stepped out of the courthouse with heavy feet as if I were dragging lead chains behind me. My mind was terrifyingly blank while the scorching sun of Charleston hit my face and made me squint my eyes.

In that instant I saw him because Gavin, the man who had been my husband until a few minutes ago, was leaning against an old motorcycle. He had his arm wrapped around the waist of another woman named Penelope who wore a tight scarlet dress and a provocative smile.

They weren’t trying to hide but seemed to be waiting for me on purpose to deliver the final blow. Gavin pulled Penelope even closer and gave her a light kiss on the lips while looking at me with eyes full of mockery.

“How are things, Audrey? It must be a relief for you since you no longer have to live off my money,” Gavin said with a cruel smirk. I felt a lump in my throat and fought to keep my voice from trembling as I asked him how he could say that after I spent three years supporting us.

Penelope pursed her lips and spoke with a sickeningly sweet voice. “Oh honey, just stop it because Gavin fed you and clothed you while you acted like a parasite, so you should really know your place now.”

I clenched my fists so hard that my nails dug into my palms because I could handle the betrayal but not this intolerable humiliation. I was the one who worked long nights in a garment factory to pay the mortgage on the condo and managed every cent of the bills.

Gavin let out a harsh laugh and leaned in to whisper words that pierced my heart like needles. “Listen well because the fact that a country girl like you married me was the luck of your life, but now you are broke and should get ready to scrub floors.”

The surrounding crowd stared at me with pity that felt like a torrent of ice water filling me with shame. I bit my lip hard and decided not to show weakness even though my face was burning with embarrassment.

Just as I felt I was about to crumble, a line of black cars approached slowly and stopped the world around us. There were several Rolls-Royces appearing silent and imposing like predators on the quiet street.

The door of the lead vehicle opened and a middle aged man in an impeccable suit stepped out with an air of absolute authority. He walked toward me while ignoring everyone else and bowed respectfully in a gesture that left Gavin and Penelope speechless.

“Miss Sterling, it is time for you to return to your position as Chairwoman,” his deep voice rang out in the sudden silence. My ears buzzed because I could not believe what I was hearing while standing there with empty hands.

Gavin and Penelope remained frozen like statues of salt with their mouths wide open and their faces pale with confusion. The man, who I later learned was Mr. Jenkins, waited patiently for my response before opening the car door for me.

“I think you have the wrong person because my name is Audrey Miller,” I whispered while feeling completely dazed by the scene. Mr. Jenkins looked up with unshakable conviction and a strange sense of pity in his eyes.

“No, Miss, we have been searching for you for years and I will explain everything on the way if you step inside,” he replied calmly. I glanced at Gavin who was trying to speak without making a sound, and I climbed into the car to escape the whispers of the crowd.

The door closed softly and created a solid wall between me and the humiliating world I had just left behind. The interior was a different universe filled with the scent of high end leather and a silence that finally let me breathe.

As the car started smoothly, Mr. Jenkins began his story with a solemn expression. “Your true name is Serena Sterling, and you are the only daughter of William Sterling, the current president of the Solara Group.”

That name hit me like a lightning bolt because the Solara Group was one of the largest conglomerates in the country. I shook my head and told him it was impossible since my parents died long ago and I was raised by my grandmother in a small town.

“Twenty years ago, the Sterling family suffered a great tragedy and the president had to hide you for your own safety,” Mr. Jenkins explained. He handed me a tablet showing a photo of a kind man who looked just like me and a picture of me as a young girl.

The last three years of my marriage flashed before my eyes as I remembered begging Gavin for money to send to my grandmother. I remembered the tears I shed when my mother in law called me a rootless peasant while I worked myself to the bone.

“The president’s health is very delicate now and he ordered us to find you so you could take control of the company,” Mr. Jenkins continued. I looked out the window at the passing skyscrapers while realizing my life had flipped from abandoned wife to billionaire heiress in one morning.

The car passed through an imposing iron gate and stopped in front of a spectacular white mansion that looked like a fairy tale castle. I felt like a speck of dust about to be swallowed by opulence as I stepped out of the vehicle.

An elegant woman named Mrs. Higgins greeted me at the door with a sweet smile and took my hand with genuine warmth. “Serena, I have heard so much about your suffering, but please consider this your home from now on,” she whispered.

She led me to a grand room on the second floor where the faint smell of medicine hung in the air. “Your father is inside and he has wished so much to see you,” she said as I reached for the cold doorknob with a shaking hand.

The man in the bed was a shadow of his former self but his eyes glowed with tears when he saw me enter. “You have come back, Serena,” he rasped while reaching out a thin hand that I took immediately.

That night I was assigned a suite larger than my old apartment but I felt more alone than ever amidst the silk and marble. I sat by the window until Mr. Jenkins entered with a tray of food and a thick stack of documents.

“Miss, I know you are confused but Vice President Silas Vance is planning to seize control of the group tomorrow morning,” he warned. Silas was described as an ambitious man who intended to drain the company’s assets through a ghost project in the Florida Keys.

I felt a surge of adrenaline because I couldn’t let my father’s life work be destroyed by a criminal. I told Mr. Jenkins I was ready and spent the entire night drinking black coffee while studying financial reports and personnel records.

I had secretly taken online finance courses during my marriage hoping for independence, but I never knew those skills would become my weapon. By dawn, I had found massive irregularities in the Florida project including inflated prices and fake partners.

I looked in the mirror and saw a woman with a gaze of steel who was no longer the submissive wife Gavin had discarded. I chose a cream colored suit for the board meeting and pinned a sapphire butterfly brooch to my lapel for luck.

When I entered the Solara Tower, hundreds of employees whispered about the inexperienced girl who was supposedly taking over. I ignored them and walked into the boardroom where Silas Vance sat in my father’s chair with a look of pure arrogance.

Silas presented his five hundred million dollar hotel project with eloquent jargon that seemed to dazzle the corrupt board members. When he finished, he suggested a vote immediately, but I broke the silence with a voice that commanded attention.

“I have a few questions regarding the contractors who are currently facing bankruptcy and lawsuits,” I said while opening my files. Silas stiffened as I pointed out that the land was valued at three thousand dollars less than what he reported.

“Where is the extra one hundred and fifty million dollars going, Mr. Vance?” I asked coldly while the room fell into a deathly silence. Silas began to sweat and stammered about appraisals, but I didn’t let him finish his lies.

I revealed that he directed the appraisal department himself and that his projected returns were mathematically impossible. The board members shifted from disdain to absolute respect as they realized I was not a puppet but a lethal adversary.

By noon, the news of Silas’s defeat had spread through the building and the employees looked at me with newfound admiration. My secretary informed me that a man named Gavin was in the lobby claiming to be my family.

I told her to have him wait in the busiest part of the lobby because I wanted everyone to see this encounter. I went down the executive elevator and saw Gavin standing there with a cheap bouquet of roses and tattered clothes.

“Audrey, or Serena, I am so sorry about everything because Penelope seduced me and I lost my mind,” Gavin pleaded while dropping to his knees. The employees watched in shock as the man who had insulted me days ago begged for another chance.
